Mozilla Messaging reintegrates with Labs, unifies focus on Web-based communication

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla’s increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs’ current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change — some URLs might change, but that’s it — and presumably Messaging’s F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user — for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users — is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year — and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs’ sleeve!

Zen Coding high-speed HTML shorthand plug-in updated

zencoding

Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren’t familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts “Click here” within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.

There are several other improvements but they’re all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

ISS ready for new zero-g experiments, students asked to float ideas

ISS-zero-g-student-space-experiments

Those secret space experiments you’ve been scheming? They may never happen if you try to go it alone. Fortunately, the space science group NCESSE can get you a ride, having started the countdown for its fifth wave of microgravity experiments aboard the International Space Station. US and international students from grade 5 up to university level can submit ideas until September 12th, 2012, with final culling by December 7. The mini-labs — which can include experiments in seed germination or crystal growth, for example — are set to be ferried aboard a SpaceX flight in April 2013. Three similar missions have flown nearly 60 student experiments already, with a fourth set as soon as the Falcon 9 craft deigns to go. If you’ve got a flat-out good idea being prevented by big G, hit the source to see how you could get it fired off to the ISS.

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: the Water Discus Hotel, magnetic LED bulbs and pig poo electricity

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

Image

Man-made islands; indoor ski slopes; temporary ice hotels. We thought we had seen it all in Dubai, and then the Middle Eastern city went and outdid itself with the Water Discus Hotel, a hotel that will feature a series of sci-fi styled discs, one of which will be located 21 stories underwater. For those who prefer to stay above water, Antwerp will open one of the world’s largest floating swimming pools this summer. Made from an old ferry boat, Badboot will be 120 meters long and it’ll be part of a larger facility that can host as many as 600 people. And across the point in New York, the One World Trade Center skyscraper was just crowned the tallest building in NYC.

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest

Yes, that’s right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren’t always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight – the have arcing trajectories, so you don’t always hit exactly where you aim.

There’s another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they’re large too. Simply beautiful!

Ridiculously Loud Bike Horn May Be Perfect for Causing Public Disturbances

Anyone that’s ridden a bicycle in any sort of urban environment, knows the dangers of inattentive motorists. The tiny bell on the handle bars is great if you want to get the attention of pedestrian or other bicyclist. To make sure you get the attention of the guy blasting Skrillex in his car, you need something with a few more decibels.

Blue Origin dishes more details on its Bezos-backed spacecraft

Blue Origin dishes more details on its Bezos-backed spacecraft

Blue Origin typically keeps pretty tight-lipped about its projects. The private space-travel firm claims it prefers to talk about what is has done, rather than what it hopes to do. As such, We recently heard about its “Space Vehicle” (that’s its actual name,) having completed wind-tunnel testing, and now the firm (partly funded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos) has revealed a little more. The craft in question is a seven-seater, and it took 180 rigorous tests to get to the final design. Blue Origin has been working with NASA under the agency’s CCDev program, which awarded the firm $22 million to develop the project. Under the same initiative, Blue Origin is about to start testing on its BE-3 engine thrust chamber, which will help give the BE-3 rocket motor its 100,000 pounds of thrust. Once complete, this engine will be used in the company’s multi-launch vehicle, and is currently on the test stand at NASA’s Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. We’ll spare you the puns about it not being “rocket science.”

Lenovo to invest $800 million into new mobile device development facilities

The world’s second (or third) biggest PC manufacturer has announced plans to invest $800 million in a new mobile product-centric facility. Lenovo wants to get closely involved with the lucrative world of smartphones and tablets, promising that several thousand employees at the new base in Wuhan will focus on new mobile devices for both China and overseas. Lenovo’s pegged to launch the K800, one the first Intel-powered Android phones, at the end of the month, but this marks a concerted effort to advance both its tablet and phone collections — and offer up more space for those other side projects.

32-inch ‘LaserSaber’ lights up your Star Wars dreams, burns the curtains (video)

32-inch 'LaserSabre' lights up your Star Wars dreams, burns the curtains (video)

If you enjoyed all those not-at-all tiresome “May the 4th be with you” tweets yesterday, then this is likely right up your equatorial trench. Wicked Lasers, makers of the eye-meltingly powerful S3 Krypton laser has developed a $100 attachment for the same that will bring a few not-so-little boys’ dreams true. The ahem LaserSaber add-on takes the pin-sharp beam of light from the company’s S3 range of lasers, and sends it down a 32″ polycarbonate “blade”. A so called magnetic gravity system imitates the powering-up and down of those other famous sabers, but they stopped at adding sound effects. Bear in mind, you’re still dealing with imperial levels of light here, so dueling is most definitely not recommended, but if you want the nearest thing to the real deal, remember, May the 5th we told you.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print

HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that’s designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week’s use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC’s release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re still using Android’s stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels

Mozilla’s Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox’s new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel — which is analogous to Chrome Canary — that will be called ‘aurora’ and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new ‘nightly icon.’ The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including ‘aurora’) are not necessarily final, but it’s unlikely that they’ll change. We’re also awaiting the arrival of the new ‘channel switching’ technology, which should arrive in the next few days — in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

Verizon takes the lead on text to 911 services

Verizon takes the lead on text to 911 services

The FCC first outlined its intention to allow texting to emergency services back in 2010, and since then despite more talk of accepting photo and video messages, nothing official came to be. This week, however, Verzion has taken the initiative, and announced its own plans to enable text to 911 for its customers. Working with TeleCommunication Systems, the big red hopes that it can facilitate the sending of SMS messages to emergency call-centers as soon as early 2013. Texting isn’t just about adding communication options, it also provides a valuable tool to the deaf, hard of hearing and situations where talking is dangerous, or not possible. The service will use existing CDMA and SMS networks, and therefore should be available to all customers once finally rolled out.

Xamarin’s XobotOS opens prospect of Android port to C#, can of worms

Xamarin-XobotOS-ports-Android-to-C-Sharp

Would it be ironic if Android developers did an end-run around Microsoft patents by using Microsoft’s own C#? Or if Google kiboshed its Oracle brouhaha with the aid of none other than Redmond? We’re asking because Xamarin, the wacky open source implementer of .NET, has ported Android to Microsoft’s C# with its XobotOS project. Although just an experiment and unlikely to solve Google’s issues, the team showed that running the robot on C# instead of Java gave fewer coding limitations, better battery life and direct graphics access. Additionally, Xamarin reports “massive” speed gains on its HTC Flyer and Acer Iconia when running the side-project port — no surprise given C#’s machine heritage. Sure, it’s pure speculation that Mountain View and its developers would ever change their Java MO, but a little patent relief and faster Android devices in one kill shot? That’s a sweet idea.

Dish Network, AMC dispute could see the network’s channels dropped this summer

It wasn’t that long ago that Dish Network was proudly offering AMC HD to its customers (especially since DirecTV didn’t, which has since been rectified) but now the company is willing to let the network’s contract expire this summer, taking new episodes of Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead away from subscribers. The source of the sudden animosity, according to a press release from AMC, is continuing litigation between it and Dish Network over dropping the Voom HD channels back in 2008, leading to them going dark soon after. The LA Times reports Dish Network claims the denial of its appeal on a decision in the case has nothing to do with its sudden change of heart is solely about AMC’s high renewal cost for a relatively low viewership. Whatever you believe, the sniping and threats will likely continue right up until the contract runs out June 30th, which is at least long enough for this season of Mad Men to finish on its own.

ZocDoc Rolls Out In Tampa Bay; Says Gen Y Is Clueless About Health Care

zocdocZocDoc, the professional booking platform for doctors, is rolling out to another market as of this week: Tampa, Florida – and incidentally, company CEO Cyrus Massoumi also happens to be a Florida native. But that’s not why Tampa was chosen as the next major metro area to join the lineup of ZocDoc’s regions served – the company says that it chooses new markets based on demand from both patients and doctors alike. In conjunction with the launch, ZocDoc also released the findings from a new survey it commissioned which highlights why ZocDoc happens to be in such demand: it’s solving the frustrating problem of finding a doctor and booking an appointment – something which the youngest generation of patients is apparently the most ill-equipped to handle, at least according to the findings.

New iPad Battery Life

The new iPad has the same battery life as the iPad 2. This may strike some as peculiar because the iPad 3 has a new more highly-powered battery. However, although the battery does carry more juice, this is offset by the new features of the iPad 3 which require more power, for example the high-definition Retina display and the 4G connectivity. That said, the new iPad battery life is still perfectly reasonable and is suitable both for casual at-home use [...]

UC Berkeley freshman shows us his ridiculously automated dorm (video)

Image

Besides beer pong, the whole point of going away to college is to blossom into an independent, motivated, self-sufficient adult. That is, of course, unless your dorm’s name is BRAD (Berkeley Ridiculously Automated Dorm), where freshman Derek Low controls devices all around his room without even getting out of bed. An app on his phone can adjust ambient lighting and curtain position depending on the situation. His laptop uses Dragon Dictate to turn shouts into tasks his pile of servos and motors can accomplish. Just saying “Romantic mode” makes a disco ball pop out of the ceiling and plays the epically passionate Elton John song, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.” As if that wasn’t enough, the emergency “party mode” button located next to the bed activates a bunch of lasers and strobes, as well as fog and blacklights while a bumpin’ stereo system cranks out dance music. This dorm is clearly every college freshman’s dream. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wake up with Justin Bieber every morning? Check out the video after the break.

Does the Home screen need updating in iOS 6? [Poll]

We’ll keep this one short but sweet — Does the Home screen need updating in iOS 6? Rene laid out a lot of the pros and cons in his iOS 6 Home screen article a couple of days ago, and we discussed it in depth on the iPhone & iPad Live podcast last night. Hundreds of millions of users already know how to use the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad Home screen, and that’s a huge barrier to change. Maybe not to geeks, but certainly to mainstream users.

Ask DLS: Cross-platform multiplayer games that work on Android and iOS

askdls

Here’s one for our knowledgeable commenters: I recently bought my girlfriend an iPad. I, on the other hand, own an Android device. And now we’re looking for games we can play using both devices.

There’s no dearth of multiplayer games either for Android or for iOS. But finding multiplayer games that can cross the platform boundary is an entirely different matter.

Jay recently posted Words with Friends which is one such game. It’s actually an ideal example, because it’s turn-based so you don’t necessarily both have to be next to your device at the same time (great for long-distance gaming).

But what other examples are there? What multiplayer games are there that let iOS users play with Android users?

Ugh. Customers. The little brats. You give them the chance to pay extra for unlimited data so they can use their smartphones as designed, and then when you take it away, they complain! AT&T’s #1 regrets the whole damn thing. More »

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

google chrome malicious download

Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading — a save button is still presented, of course, in case you’re convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We’d like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon — like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won’t notice the icon or change in wording as they’ll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you’ll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.
